The Google+ project?

Personally think I might be missing the point… either that, or this might actually become the next failure from Google..

Before I continue, let me say first that I have not yet actually used Google+, my thoughts are entirely based on some video’s from Google and their demo. It is possible that, once I am actually using it I will feel differently about it, you never know of course, but this is how I feel about it for now.

From what I can see now, Google+ exists out of several components: circles, hangouts, instant upload, sparks and huddle. For this blog I will start with the second component, ‘hangouts’, and come back to ‘circles’ at the end (I promise, it makes more sense that way).

Hangouts

Hangouts is, in my personal opinion, nothing more but a regular group video chat. That said, it most likely isn’t for me. There are very few people with whom I actually do a video chat from time to time, and they all use Skype. Usually these are private chats, but even with Skype you have the possibility to do a group video chat, so that isn’t anything really new in my personal opinion.

One thing I do like about ‘hangouts’ (I honestly have no clue if Skype has this feature) is that whoever is speaking the loudest or attracts the most attention, is also the one who will be placed in the center, bigger, video. That’s a neat feature and for businesses I can see some purpose in this when they have video meetings, but, like said, Skype could be used for most of this as well, and it probably looks a tad more professional to use (besides, you usually don’t really ‘hang out’ with most of your business partners, do you?). Other than this it doesn’t look any different from setting your status to available on Skype.

Instant Upload

Instant upload, I am not sure I like the sound of that. I think we all take pictures with our smartphones from time to time, and I am almost just as sure that we sometimes have a failure amongst them. With instant upload you will automatically upload them all, including those failed ones, or this is at least what we’re told to believe. I don’t know about you, but before actually uploading and sharing a picture to the web, I rather first review the picture to see if it is what I want, or if I have to do it again. Like said, I haven’t used Google+ yet so it is very well possible that there is a review option.

But even so, and let me get it straight that I am an Android user and far from being an Apple user, I do feel inclined to say “there’s an app for that”.  There is.. and a lot of them too! There are so many apps available on all the different OS’s which you can use to make pictures with, even edit your pictures with all kinds of effects and filters, and upload them to the web for sharing with your family, friends, Facebook, Twitter and more. What makes this so different, besides that it instantly upload it all? I have no idea but I sure don’t like the idea of instantly uploading something.

And to stay with Apple, how is Google going to make this work on Apple phones? Is Apple going to allow this?

Sparks

I don’t have much to say about this one but like the other components, again this is something that is already widely available, and in so many forms as well. Think about bookmarks in your browser, rss feeds, websites such as Digg or Delicious.

Sure, you could stress ‘sparks’ is all of those in one, but what do you really get then? Facebook? And saying that.. doesn’t it start to look more and more like what Facebook is doing? Hmm… well, onto the next one.

Huddle

It sounds like we’re going to do a team sport, as they usually ‘huddle up’ to set a strategy or to make certain decisions. And from what I can see, that must be where they got the name for this component for, as that is a bit what Google wants to achieve (according to the video and demo).

Technically it is texting but this time with a group of people. And, it is getting a bit boring to repeat myself constantly, again there are other apps who do the same and already have a vast share of users.

Circles

The idea of circles makes sense. Everyone has acquaintances in certain circles, some are family, some are friends, some are colleagues etc etc, and some circles also overlap. Someone who is a good friend could be your colleague and also a family member. In that way, circles makes sense.

With circles, you can share whatever you want (I think) with whoever you want to share it with. If you have something that you only want to share with family, you can do it with this. It’s like having certain people grouped together..

And yes, again, (again again! I love repetition! – boring eh?) there are several apps/sites who do this already… the most famous one is, of course, Facebook.

There we have the name Facebook again.. is that what Google+ is supposed to be? A Facebook killer? I don’t know, from what I’ve seen so far, Google+ is nicely created but in order to compete with Facebook I think it has a very long way to go. Google+ has some nice features but, in my opinion, it doesn’t really offer anything new.

To me it feels as if Google is trying to do something but, at the same time, constantly stays behind the facts. If you ask me, they should stick to what made them big and, instead, work closer with the already existing social media players on the market and see what else you can do there besides what they’re currently doing.

It is just really nothing new if you take certain existing features and combine them together. It is like Google Buzz all over again, that tried to take on Twitter and failed miserably at that. The only hope I have for them is that they can, somehow, nicely incorporate this into the Android OS and although I have a feeling they will do this, I still have my doubts. I feel as if there are many Apple users who do use the other features currently available but who are not very likely to jump onto the Google+ wagon (if it comes to Apple phones). And, if so, we might see a breach between Apple and Android/Google users even more than there is now, and I doubt anyone is really waiting for that. Instead of being social towards all of your contacts, you would then reach only half of them because one group is active on Google+ while the others are active on another place, such as Facebook.

Sure, I will give it a go once it becomes available but until then I will remain skeptical as to the use of it all. It just feels as if Google wants to do too much right now..

First a tsunami, now possibly radiation?

There you live, in the middle of the biggest ocean of this blue planet. An island paradise, about 43 miles in diameter on the longest stretch and over 2,350 miles away from the nearest continent. We are so very small but still one risk after another.

A terrible disaster happened last week in Japan, an 8.9 earthquake which immediately caused a tsunami with 30 feet high waves. The same tsunami would also come to our island and, like I also wrote in one of my previous articles, this did cause some worries.

Now, almost a week later, new concerns are emerging. The earlier mentioned disaster is at the dawn of possibly an even bigger disaster as six nuclear reactors seem to have huge problems with the cooling of the nuclear bars. In the worst scenario, this could cause a chain reaction meltdown. And that is where the worries start.

If a meltdown sends enough radiation into the air, then this might end up in the jet stream and then it would only take a few days before the radiation reaches Hawaii with a possibility of fallout in Hawaii. By the way, a jet stream is a very strong wind (100 mph and over) at around 30,000 feet height. And one of the jet streams is currently going towards Hawaii and the US. A situation like that is not completely unimaginable.

And that such a situation is not completely unimaginable, is something we can see here on the islands (and also on the mainland US when I hear the stories). The news of possible radiation created a spur run on iodine tablets and they were almost completely sold out in only one day, and I hear it is not much different on the US West coast. Normally such tablets cost around 10 dollar for 14 pieces, when I checked earlier online I’ve seen prices up to 425 dollar for the same 14 tablets. They are very scarce and the manufacturer seems not to be expecting any new supplies before April 18.

Halfway April? That is still a whole month away from us… and whether or not it would be smart to buy these pills, it kind of looks as if one is not prepared for a similar situation, which is a bit odd when you look at the history with Chernobyl. Or do the various governments have millions of these pills in stock somewhere? For some reason I don’t think they do, but then again, I could be wrong.

And do these pills help? Possibly, but you don’t have to be entirely sure about it. I read many various messages in which is stated that it is firstly not exactly healthy to take them when there is no medical need, they flood the thyroid with ‘good’ iodine so the body will not take any radioactive iodine in but this could cause for some thyroid problems. So you can imagine there are quite a few warnings given for these tablets. Next to this, these pills only help against the ‘iodine 131′ radiation, but there are far more different forms of radiation which we could see, like also shown in the scheme below (sorry, so far I only found a Dutch diagram, will update when I find an English one.. ‘stolen’ from nu.nl).

Radioactivity & radiation

Do we have these iodine pills at home? No.. Would I like to? Yes, somehow I do. Although I do believe it will not matter much, it would still be good to have some just in case. Having less risk does provide a better feeling. But to buy them for such amounts? No, I wont do that either… if dangerous radiation from Japan would be imminent here on the islands, then chances are very likely that we will not wait it out but leave on the first possible plane to a safer location. We can always come back at a later time. But if it comes that far? I don’t expect it will.

But still, how do the people here assess the chances of dangerous radiation? President Obama, and the state of Hawaii alike, do not expect that we will have to worry here or on the US West coast. They also placed two extra radiation detectors in Hawaii to ease the worries of the people here.

However, while it is said that this is done to put the mind a bit more at ease, it is also ground for new questions. We should not forget that the same government has told the people more things in the past, which eventually turned out not to be entirely true, and that is something the people here know as well.

And what to think about the current nuclear plants in the US? Let me first say that this is really not my expertise, so please don’t mind me if I misjudge certain things, but when I read an article what states that the US plants, for example those on the San Adreas fault, can withstand an earthquake with a strength up to 7.5 on the Richter scale (don’t forget: the one in Japan was 8.9), and then half a day later I hear that President Obama said that a similar disaster is not possible in the US, then I do place some question marks at that remark. Is that true? It doesn’t sound very plausible I think. And because it doesn’t sound plausible, it also raises questions to a possible radiation here.

One thing does put my mind a bit at ease, although I have no idea if this is a wrong thought, and that is the disaster in Chernobyl in 1986. We’re about 3,600 miles away from the nuclear plants in Japan, while I lived ‘only’ little over 1000 miles away from Chernobyl. That was much closer, and that was something we also survived, although it did cause for a lot of trouble in Western Europe (and still does) according to Wikipedia.

To be honest, I don’t dare to go completely with what the government says, that is something I never did before anyways but will certainly not do in a situation such as this. Instead I try to read a lot of different news sources to stay up-to-date and not to be completely depending on only one source, and I notice a lot of people over here think the same about this.

And even though it does run through my mind almost constantly, and want to stay up-to-date the whole time, I thought I was not worrying too much. However, I have to come back from that thought… Last night, when I wrote the Dutch part of this post, the civil defense warningsystem came on television, just like last week with the tsunami. My heart skipped a beat I can tell you. Fortunately that didn’t take too long as it turned out quickly to be ‘only’ a test.

Let’s hope that a certain disaster spares us, and certainly also those in Japan and the rest in the world. There is enough trouble in the world, we’re not waiting for a nuclear disaster.

Update, March 17: The local government also let us know that, when something does happen, we should best hide in our homes and keep these preferably air tight. That could prove fun as we have various windows that we cannot even close.. They will also place tents across the island for the distribution of iodine tablets. That, plus the messages of the US advising all citizens to leave Japan does not sound very reassuring…

17th annual Honolulu Festival parade

Last Sunday we went to the Honolulu Festival, a three day lasting fair with a great parade on the last day to close the festival with groups of people from Japan, Australia, Tahiti, Philippines, China, Taiwan, Korea, Hawaii, Alaska and more.

There was also a fireworks show scheduled but this was cancelled due to the recent events in Japan. One of the reasons was that the show originated from one of the disaster areas, which made perfect sense. The rest of the festival continued but with the necessary adjustments.

We made a little *cough* video of the parade, which I will place below. The parade lasted for over 3 hours  but I was able to bring the duration of the video back to about 43 minutes. I mostly took out the empty spots, and those who were less interesting (for example, groups who just marched by without doing anything) or because of some other reason (think about a situation with a photographer ‘videobombing’ lol). But oh well, I think 43 minutes is long enough haha ;)

Have fun watching!
